Milestones

Where do I start? This weekend we are so busy I barely have time/energy left to blog! Yet here I am. I am extremely excited and pleased to make the following announcement:

We have finished all the wood trim! Yes, really I mean it this time- it is actually done!!! What a feeling of elation.

We started the doors and made some good headway on them.

Steve pulled his roof-duty while I finished the last of the trim. Here he is rebuilding the parapet wall. The top course of bricks were loose and had to be relayed. For the 2nd and third course, the joints were ground out and remortared.

Here you can see where Steve has already grinded out the joints.

I spent much of Saturday, removing all the paint from our door hinges and hardware. I was planning to pull out the stripper, but our contractor came up with a great tip!

Use a blow torch to heat up the paint and then scrape it off with a metal wire brush. I was able to strip all the door hardware (for 9 doors, which was 9 sets of hinges, 9 mortise locksets, pins, etc...) all in one day. Another milestone crossed. You know how I like to finish projects and not have them drag on.

You start with this and...

twenty minutes later...you have this!

We showed the apartment to one set of prospective tenants today and have another appointment tomorrow. Wish us luck on that part!

Amazing! Congratulations on the wood trim. Even reading about it, it seemed to go on and on. You must have dreamt about filling holes and sanding wood.

I can't believe that first showing didn't rent it on the spot! As a prospective renter I would have laid my body down in the middle of the livingroom and refused to move until my deposit was accepted and I had a contract :-) The place is lovely!

Thanks. So far everyone has loved it, but we are going to pick the best of the bunch- or rather the people who seem the most in sync with our "quiet" lifestyle.

Greg- more like I couldn't sleep if I thought about how much wood I had to do!

I've also heard that you can soak painted hardware in a crockpot overnight, and the paint just falls off when you pull them out. Haven't tried it, though...
